Their legacy and heritage is an example of what great American companies stand for quality, integrity, and innovation. As a relatively new company, 915 Siteworks strives to live up to the highest standards of spray foam insulation every day. So we thought that our first blog post would talk a little bit about spray foam and the company we are very excited to work with.

Early Beginnings

Let’s go all the way back to 1858 when just another New Yorker named Henry Ward Johns began his business in a basement. According to the legend, this young man used his wife’s new clothes wringer and a tea kettle to apply hot tar to cloth and create roof shingles. About one decade later, the operation was out of the basement and making its way in the market with the first patent on an asbestos product. This would be the foundation of the John Manville product for the next century.

In the late 19th century Charles B Manville and his sons founded a pipe insulation company in Milwaukee. Charles B Manville soon began selling asbestos products from Johns company and eventually the two organizations would merge to form the Johns Manville Corporation. With the merger, came the expansion of the product line to include sheet packaging for cylinders and other industrial products. Around this time JM went public in the New York stock exchange in 1927.

A Company of Innovation

As the decades went by and the technology changed, the company continued to take on new challenges and new products. They were never content with staying stagnant and this made them a well-known innovative spirit within the industrial equipment industry. Not many companies can claim they survived and thrived through trying times like the Civil War, World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II.

In fact, it was during World War II that the early iterations of spray foam insulation began hitting the markets. Initially reserved for military operations, the insulation method was used for homes starting around the 1960s and 70s.

As an early pioneer of the asbestos product, it managed to survive even after the product was discovered to have adverse health effects.  It was after this time—more than ever— that the company committed itself to absolute standards of safety and ensured that extensive research and knowledge informed every one of their products.
